Core concepts
Conversations
Threads inside a project: who can take part, how tagging works, what Needs your reply and Unread mean, and the conversations bell on My Activities.
- Everyone
Conversations keep questions and answers with the project instead of in email or chat. Each project has its own threads. A thread can be about the project as a whole or about one activity, and you can tag the people who need to answer.
You find a project's threads on the project page, under Conversations, and on the project's card in My Activities.
Threads
A thread has a title, a first message and then replies, oldest first. It can be about one activity of the project, which is shown with it, or about The project as a whole.
- On the project page, the Conversations tab lists the project's threads with the open thread beside them, and + New thread above.
- On My Activities, each project card has a Conversations tab next to Activities and Docs, with the number of threads in brackets. A thread opens in a panel.
Counts the threads, across your projects, that need your reply or that you have not opened. Pick one to open it.
Badges such as 1 thread tagged and 1 new thread say what is waiting in this project's conversations.
Conversations (3) lists this project's threads, grouped by what needs you.
Who can take part
A project's conversations are for its members. Members include the project's PM and everyone assigned to an activity in it. Members can read every thread of the project, start new ones, reply and tag other members.
Someone who can open the project page without being a member, for example with Projects: View, sees Conversations are for this project's members instead of the threads.
Start a thread or reply
- Open the Conversations tab. On the project page or on the project's card in My Activities, then choose + New thread.
- Write the thread. Fill in Thread title and First message.
- Say what it is about. Under About an activity (optional), pick the activity, or leave The project as a whole.
- Tag the people who must answer. Search for them in the tag picker (Search people…), then choose Start thread.
To answer, open the thread, write in Reply… and choose Reply. Tag people adds tags to a reply. Cancel tagging drops the tags you picked, so nobody is notified by mistake.
Tagging and who is notified
- The tag picker offers the project's active members. You cannot tag yourself.
- Each person you tag gets a notification, <your name> tagged you in “<thread title>”, in the app and by email. Tags are not sent to Slack.
- Tags are the only thing that notifies anyone. A reply without tags tells nobody; the thread simply shows as unread to the members who have not opened it.
- Opening the thread marks your tag notification for it as read.
- The notification's link opens the thread where you can reach it: on the project page if you can open that, otherwise on your project card in My Activities.
Someone tagged in a project where they have no open activity of their own still gets that project's card on My Activities, so the thread has somewhere to open.
Needs your reply, Unread and Read
Every thread list is grouped in three, most urgent first. The same rules drive the badges on project cards and the conversations bell, so the numbers always agree.
- Needs your reply
- You are tagged in the thread and the latest message is not yours. It stays here until you have the last word.
- Unread
- You have never opened the thread and the latest message is not yours.
- Read
- Everything else: you have opened it, or you wrote the latest message. A thread you have opened stays Read however many replies follow, unless you are tagged in it.
On a project card, N threads tagged counts threads that tag you, read or not, and N new threads counts threads that neither tag you nor have been opened by you. A thread is never counted in both.
The conversations bell
The bell at the top right of My Activities is for conversations only. Its number counts every thread, across the projects on the page, that needs your reply or that you have not opened. Open it to see each thread with its project, whether it Needs your reply or is Unread, and who posted last. Picking one opens that project's card on Conversations, at that thread.
The page refreshes it every minute while you are looking at it, and straight after you read or post. It is not the Notifications entry at the bottom of the left menu, which covers everything else; see Notifications, reminders and escalations.
